UDCAS was established near the most important fruit growing areas in Hungary (Szabolcs-Szatmár country) and also an essential maize growing area in Hungary (Hajdú-Bihar county) . Main research activities have been performed on pomefruit (apple and pear), stone fruits (plum and cherries) and maize since 1959. Main research topics in fruit and maize science are: I) Epidemiological and modelling approach research for improving disease management. II) Development of new forecasting and disease & pest management approaches for environmentally benign orchard systems. III) Pesticide resistance management and pest & disease resistance in environmentally benign orchard systems. IV) Applied research on improving orchard management practices with special reference to pruning. V) Research on exploring new features of flower biology related to fruit thinning. VI) Research on environmental pollution and ecotoxicology. VII) Fundamental research on developing product for functional foods in clinical science.
