JKI is a federal authority in the operational sector of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer protection (BMELV) in Germany providing the scientific basis for the tasks assigned to it and for decision-making processes in the Federal Government. The 15 JKI institutes investigate the field of plant protection, breeding and production in all crops. JKI has a long history in all fields of assessment of plant protection products and methods and in R&D of strategies for integrated and biological plant protection. Its specific areas of competence include:
(i) development of the principles of IPM in arable crops, vegetables, vineyards and orchards; (ii) long-term field experiments and on-field studies on IPM; (iii) research on the assessment of plant protection; (iv) research in biological control in particular in vegetables and organic farming as well as non chemical weed management in arable crops; (v) modelling and risk assessment of different plant protection strategies; (vi) agro-ecosystem functioning by integrative modelling; (vii) risk assessment of GMOs and (viii) soil ecology and rhizospheric microbial communities.
